The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra will open its 104th season this weekend with a Newmont Masterworks Gold series performance of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1.

Pianist Stewart Goodyear, who blew local audiences away with his VSO show in Nov. 2021 will be performing the incredibly challenging masterpiece penned by the Russian composer between Nov. 1874 and Feb. 1875. First performed in 1875 in Boston, the work is one of the best known piano concerti in the classical canon.

Soloist Khatia Buniatishvilli was originally scheduled to perform, but was unable to travel to Vancouver at this time. Fortunately, Goodyear was available hot on the heels of of his acclaimed performance of the piece at the Kennedy Centre for the Arts this June. The Washington Post noted Goodyear’s “incisive attack of Tchaikovsky’s 1874 concerto made for one of the most memorable performances of it I’ve ever seen.”

There will also be a Sunday performance of the composition as part of the RGF Integrated Wealth Management Symphony Sundays Series.
