Netanyahu Gloats as Prosecution Stumbles: ‘In Your Face’

Former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gloated Monday because the prosecution in his corruption trial requested the courtroom for permission to amend its indictment in opposition to him when a key witness backtracked on his earlier testimony in opposition to him.

“In your face,” Netanyahu instructed reporters.

He faces three expenses, which have been described by critics from the start as bogus, and as an obvious effort by Netanyahu’s political enemies within the Israeli authorized fraternity to take away him from energy.

In what is called case 4000, thought of essentially the most critical of three, “Netanyahu is accused of providing lucrative benefits to Shaul Elovitch, then-owner of [communications firm] Bezeq and the Walla news site, in exchange for favorable coverage,” the Occasions of Israel notes.

A former Netanyahu-aide-turned state’s witness, Shlomo Filber, instructed investigators in 2017 that Netanyahu made a hand gesture suggesting “drop the whole thing.” He then modified his story to implicate Netanyahu.

However final week, Filber went again to his unique story, and instructed the courtroom that he could have misinterpreted the non-verbal cue. The prosecution then requested the courtroom to alter a key date within the indictment to account for Filber’s obvious inconsistency.

Columnist Caroline Glick noted on the time that the cost was ridiculous, for the reason that deal to approve a merger involving Bezeq was “approved by all the relevant legal and regulatory authorities” and that rivals obtained related tax breaks. Bezeq really misplaced cash on the deal. Furthermore, if Netanyahu had hoped for higher protection from Walla, he by no means obtained it: “Some 75 percent of the articles about him were negative,” as they had been in a lot of the remainder of the left-wing Israeli media.

The prosecution has since been clouded by revelations that state investigators unlawfully hacked Netanyahu’s telephone and people of his associates in an effort to spy on him and use damaging private info to show witnesses in opposition to him.

Netanyahu has refused to simply accept any plea offers and has insisted on proving his innocence. The prosecution has stumbled because the post-Netanyahu authorities, a ragtag coalition led by former aide Naftali Bennet, has moved nearer to inner collapse.
