Melanie Lynskey On Body Shaming She’s Faced Since ‘Yellowjackets’

Sometimes, the most insidious body shaming comes low-key disguised as well-intentioned “concern”—just ask Yellowjackets star Melanie Lynskey, because she’s dealt with *plenty* of that. Oh, and for the record, she is most definitely NOT here for comments from strangers about her body OR her health.

Melanie took to Twitter on Friday night to sound off about the issue. According to Us Weekly, the actress wrote about her experiences with not-so-artfully-disguised body commentary in a post retweeting writer Ashley C. Ford, who shared (in a now-deleted tweet) that people sometimes seem “confused” by the fact that she’s “not thin and also not trying to lose weight.”

“The story of my life since Yellowjackets premiered,” Melanie wrote in her own tweet on the topic. “Most egregious are the ‘I care about her health!!’ people…b*tch you don’t see me on my Peleton! You don’t see me running through the park with my child. Skinny does not always equal healthy.”

Melanie’s candid tweet got plenty of support, including from her husband, actor Jason Ritter, who retweeted her and added, “If anyone has any further unsolicited comments about *anybody* else’s body, they can feel free to write them in permanent ink onto their own foreheads and swan dive directly into the sun.”

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend actress Donna Lynne Champlin also voiced support for Melanie and her message, replying, “Been there, momma. You owe no one a goddam thing but a brilliant performance which you are turning out in SPADES. Keep being f*cking gorgeous and talented and know you’ve got fans out here who think you are a beautiful queen and a magnificent actress.”

And those are just some of the supportive messages Melanie received from fellow famous people. The tweet also resonated in a big way with plenty of normals, who chimed in with rallying replies. Here’s a small sample of the lovefest/share circle the tweet inspired:
