Injured Monfils withdraws from Winston-Salem Open | Sports News

Gael Monfils has withdrawn from the upcoming Winston-Salem Open tennis tournament.

At the National Bank Open in Montreal on Thursday night Monfils, the No. 17 seed from France, retired early in the second set of his match against British qualifier Jack Draper

Monfils, who trailed 6-2, 0-2, received treatment on his right ankle area, but couldn’t continue.

Monfils, who is ranked 20th in the world on the ATP Tour, accepted a wild-card entry into the Winston-Salem Open earlier this week.

The tournament is scheduled for Aug. 20-27 at the Wake Forest Tennis Center.

Monfils, 35, a native of Paris, was a finalist in Winston-Salem in 2013.
