American Armstrong units swimming world file in 50 again

GREENSBORO, N.C. — American Hunter Armstrong has set a swimming world file within the males’s 50-meter backstroke.

Armstrong posted a time of 23.71 seconds within the non-Olympic occasion whereas competing Thursday evening within the Worldwide Group Trials at Greensboro, North Carolina.

The meet is choosing the U.S. workforce that can compete at this summer season’s world championships in Budapest, Hungary, an occasion that was added to the calendar after the 2021 worlds in Fukuoka, Japan, have been postponed twice due to the coronavirus pandemic. That competitors will now be held in 2023.

The 21-year-old Armstrong, who attends Ohio State, gained a gold medal on the Tokyo Olympics final summer season by swimming the backstroke leg within the prelims of the 4×100 medley relay.

Nonetheless, he was surprised by his time within the 50 again, which eclipsed the mark of 23.80 set by Russia’s Kliment Kolesnikov in 2021.

Armstrong established an American file within the morning prelims — then went even quicker within the night.

“It was a complete shock,” he mentioned. “My best time before this was a 25.50 and in prelims I was able to throw down a 24.00 and that gave me hope, but you know Kolesnikov is one of the fastest backstrokers and freestylers in the world. To be up there with him is just incredible.”
