Everyone’s motivation for exercise is different. Some are in it for the health benefits (who amongst us doesn’t appreciate an endorphin boost?). Others enjoy the social aspect—after all, those bootcamp classes are more fun when you’ve got a buddy to go with you. No matter what gets you up and moving, having the right workout clothes at the ready is key. If your sports bra
isn’t supportive enough or your top is bunching in all the wrong places, the discomfort will probably distract you from your actual workout, whether you’re more into cardio or strength training.
With countless colors, materials, and styles to choose from, workout tank tops are an undisputed staple in any activewear wardrobe. Since there are so many different tank tops for working out, one way to approach your search is by exercise category. Are you shopping for tanks that you’ll mostly be wearing during low-impact workouts like yoga, barre, and Pilates? Or do you need something more supportive that can withstand both bike rides and HIIT classes? To help you navigate your search, we consulted fitness experts on all the best workout tank tops for every type of exercise.
Here’s a lil sneak-peek at the tanks that made the list…

for HIIT workouts
Align Waist-Length Racerback Tank Top
This tank top is made of buttery soft fabric, and the high neck will ensure you’re not constantly dealing with cleavage spilling out. “Minimal fuss is everything for a HIIT workout,” says Emma Lindsay, a performance coach at the fitness app Future and a certified personal trainer based in San Diego. “The last thing you want to be worried about is if your cleavage is showing when doing burpees—praise the high neck.”
for yoga and Pilates
Renew Support Top
This seamless style is an ideal base layer for any workout, but it especially shines for low-impact sweat sessions. “Stays in place when in downward dog, upside down, or any yoga move for that matter,” Lindsay says. “It’s a longer tank length that won’t ride up.”
for everyday wear
Wirefree Workout Tank Top
- might not be best for large busts
“You can easily wear this to class, the grocery store, heck even on a casual date, and you can’t beat the price point,” Lindsay says. “And the fabric is just like Lululemon’s Align collection.”
for the budget conscious
Estival Y Crop Tank
- soft, breathable fabric that stretches
With its classic U-shape neckline and cropped fit, this tank top is a favorite for its comfortability and affordability. The four-way stretch fabric is super breathable and soft to the touch.
Glowing Review: “This shirt exceeded my expectations! I absolutely love the material and it fits perfectly! The sizing is spot on and also I just love the way the shirt contours my body without being suffocating or too tight.”
Sculpt Cropped Tank Top
- could be short on long torsos
Thanks to a combo of lightweight fabric and mesh panels, this tank is a mainstay for the weightlifting set. “I love this cropped tank for weightlifting as it sits comfortably above my bottoms, ensuring that I have full range of movement for any exercise,” says Samantha Ortiz, a certified personal trainer based in New York City.
for a built-in bra option
Plum Tommy Tank
- colors may bleed at first when washed
Available in sizes XXS-6XL, this tank is a constant best-seller because of its medium-impact coverage and quick-drying, double-lined fabric. Another bonus? “It has UPF 50+, so it’s perfect for the outdoors,” says Taylor Cooley, a certified personal trainer and fitness instructor at Fhitting Room in New York City.
for a loose fit
Workout Muscle Tank
“This tank has a loose fit with larger arm opening, which I love,” Ortiz says. “It’s super lightweight and airy, making it perfect for super hot or cardio workouts. At around $20 for a two-pack, you cannot go wrong.”
for running and cardio workouts
With a chic scoop neckline, ribbed material, and built-in shelf bra, this tank top stays in place no matter how many miles you’re logging. Plus, you can layer on a flowy cardigan, light-wash jeans, and ballet flats to take your tank top for a spin outside the gym.
Glowing Review: “My favorite new top. Not just for working out, but lounging around the house, with jean shorts, with everything. I have a few in all the colors.”
for bike rides
Cadent Cropped Racer Tank
- could be *too* tight of a fit for those who prefer looser tanks
It shouldn’t be too surprising that the brand that made stationary bikes cool also makes some pretty stylish activewear. Available in sizes XS-3X, this racerback tank top comes in three colors, including light purple, maroon, and fuchsia.
for a breathable feel
Yemoja Mesh Tank
- wrinkle resistant material
For a classic neutral tank that you can practically live in, consider this cropped style with a nude mesh panel in the back that allows for peak breathability. Since the fabric has so much stretch, you may want to size down if you prefer a snugger fit.
for full coverage
Pacifica Sport Top
This versatile piece functions as both a sports bra and a workout tank top. The wide bands beneath the bust offer plenty of support, and this style is currently available in six colors, including rose, black, evergreen, and golden hour.
U-Neck Racerback Tank Top
- sizing can be inconsistent
This supportive tank top has extra stomach and back coverage, and the material is easy to move in. Shoppers swear by its layerability and like that it comes in more than 10 shades.
Glowing Review: “The material and fit is to die for!! I now want one of these in every color! So obsessed! The coverage and support for bigger chested girls like myself is amazing! The best part, you don’t even have to wear a bra!“
What should you take into consideration when shopping for workout tank tops?
Fabric, fabric, fabric.
Since material can seriously affect the experience (and quality) of your workout, you should always consider the fabric first, advises Cooley. For instance, if you’re doing a low-impact workout, consider the types of fabrics that will allow you to focus on the movements and postures.
“Also, consider the features and what makes the price of the tank worth it,” she says. “Look for fabric and function details: sweat-wicking, super soft material, built-in bra, mesh, UPF, sustainable fabric, etc.”
How do you know if a workout tank top fits properly?
When you’re trying to narrow it down to the right tank top and the sizing that’s best for you, keep three key elements in mind: the straps, the overall length, and how the tank lays around the underarm area.
“The straps are to support you when you move, and if they are too big, your tank will be moving around the whole time,” Cooley says. “Some like the tank to cover their bottom, and some like it hip length. And lastly, does the material lay flat underneath your arms? You want to move without feeling constricted by the cut, but also not have too loose of a fit.”
